What metadata is removed?

Author & Creator

The name of the person or account that created or last edited the PDF. Often auto-filled from your operating system username or application profile.

Producer & Creator Tool

The software used to generate the PDF — such as "Microsoft Word 2024," "Adobe Acrobat," or "macOS Quartz PDFContext." This reveals your toolchain and OS.

Title, Subject & Keywords

Document metadata fields that may contain internal project names, client names, or descriptive keywords you didn't intend to share publicly.

XMP Metadata Stream

An embedded XML block that can store extended metadata including edit history, software versions, and custom fields from document management systems.

How does it work?

We use pdf-lib to parse the PDF binary structure. The tool clears every field in the Document Info Dictionary — Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer, CreationDate, and ModDate. It then locates and removes the XMP Metadata Stream from the document catalog.

The cleaned PDF is re-serialized and verified by re-parsing. A report confirms all metadata fields read as empty. The document content, fonts, images, and formatting remain untouched.

Why remove metadata from PDF files?

Legal and business documents frequently contain author metadata that reveals who drafted a contract, proposal, or report before it was officially attributed. When you export a PDF from Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice, your username is embedded automatically.

Job applicants may inadvertently reveal that their resume was created on a company computer, or expose the exact software and template used. Recruiters and hiring managers can view this data in any PDF reader under "Document Properties."

Whistleblowers and confidential sources face serious risks from PDF metadata. The Producer field can narrow down which machine or software installation created a document, potentially identifying the source.

Our free PDF metadata remover processes everything in your browser. No uploads, no accounts, no tracking. Strip your PDF properties in seconds before sending, publishing, or sharing.

Frequently asked questions

Will removing metadata break my PDF?

No. Only the metadata fields are cleared. All pages, text, images, fonts, bookmarks, and form fields remain intact and fully functional.

Can I remove metadata from encrypted PDFs?

We attempt to load encrypted PDFs with relaxed parsing. Password-protected PDFs that require a password to open cannot be processed without the password.

How can I check what metadata my PDF contains?

In most PDF readers, go to File > Properties or Document Properties. You'll see Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer, and dates. Our tool shows what it found before removing it.
